DetailsOn March 31, Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute (MOI), a nonprofit that serves under-resourced students in the Twin Cities, will welcome award-winning authors Kate DiCamillo and Dave Eggers in casual conversation about youth education in today’s society. The public discussion will take place at the Illusion Theater in Minneapolis at 8:00 p.m., with a VIP reception at 6:30 p.m. DiCamillo and Eggers will talk current affairs, education, writing, and the 826 National tutoring network co-founded by Eggers. Students from MOI’s creative writing programs will read original works of poetry and nonfiction, and local improv troupe Blackout will perform an original sketch based off of student pieces. Attendees will get a glimpse into the magic of student creativity and walk away with tangible steps to get involved with Twin Cities students, as well as a signed book from both authors. All proceeds from the event will support the creative writing and tutoring programs MOI offers for free to Twin Cities students, as well as contribute to MOI’s chapter-in-development phase with 826 National. Kate DiCamillo was the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and is a two-time Newbery Medalist. She lives in Minneapolis, where she faithfully writes two pages a day, five days a week. Her books include Because of Winn-Dixie, Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures, and The Tale of Despereaux. Dave Eggers is the author of ten books, including Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?, The Circle, and A Hologram for the King (2012 National Book Award finalist). He is the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing company, and the co-founder of 826 National. Tickets are on sale at: http://www.illusiontheater.org/mid-continent-oceanographic-institute. General admission for the event is $60. VIP tickets are $150 and include a pre-event reception with DiCamillo and Eggers and a reserved seat in the first four rows.
