YouSaid October 2012

My soulful career search
As women, we CAN have it all-family, career, supportive husbands and meaningful friendships. [BookShelf essay, Julian Locke Micko, Sept. 2012] If we get it all at the same time, now that's a bonus. Way to go girl!
Andie Lindsay, White Bear Lake

Global patriarchy back in business
I was pleased to see Shannon Drury's column's take on global patriarchy. [SheSaid, MWP, Sept. 2012] I am no less immune to its dictates than Najiba, the woman executed in Kabul. Each of us has to define social justice issues and decide which are sufficiently painful that they are worthy of the battle. The old cruelties and ignorances are so persistent that to win still requires blood sacrifice. How ancient is that pattern that led to the murder of Najiba?

But all is not lost. Our experience and vision has matured alongside of patriarchy. As women, we are uniquely poised to be the game changers. We know to our sacred depth what it means to share our bodies with other human beings. What happens to us happens to our children. It is only one more step to accept that we are all connected. This is our reality. Once this is understood we begin to say yes to life. Ignorance and greed make less sense because we are connected. There is enough courage to shift the pattern because the reality of relationship is our truth. We are fraudulent when judging, silencing, excluding, bullying, condemning, dominating, harassing, deporting, stoning, torturing, murdering, raping, warring, excommunicating.

The old pattern of alienation continues to fail everyone. It's like the game of GO, one pebble can change the greater pattern. Let that pebble be our wisdom. We will share it.
Karen Boyd, Chanhassen, Minn.
