Karly, Patty, Elizabeth, Moira, Lyz, Barbara, Brianna, Susan, Nancy, Patt, Mary, Mayr, Marcia, Kathy, Chris, Jenny, Nicola. Strong women with strong voices. They share stories of losing, finding and using their voices.
They found their voices in poetry or politics, music or writing, contemplation or activism. For most it's been a lifelong journey. Sometimes the "finding" is about bringing out and shaping one voice. Sometimes the story is about "multi-finding" - discovering a variety of voices within one's self. Sometimes it's about finding a voice in unusual places, for example, the loud voice from a foot.
The theme that runs through the stories in this issue is about the power of finding and using one's authentic voice, the validation this gives to self and the importance of being heard.
For 26 years we're been sharing women's voices believing in the importance and strength of our stories. When you listen and really hear another woman's voice you make a connection Connections are what builds our communities.
YourThoughts is what we call the section of each magazine where we publish the voices of our readers on that issue's theme. You'll find them on page 32 of this issue. Nicola found her voice at 3 a.m. in the dark with loud young men approaching.
Mayr lost her voice when her grandfather placed her hand inside his pants. Chris found her voice at a political training. Jenny got her voice from a dog.
