Food thoughts
Kathy Magnuson and Norma Smith Olson

by Kathy Magnuson & Norma Smith Olson

"How can this be a women's magazine? Where are the recipes?" Kathy's dad asked her when looking at the first editions over 26 years ago. We can probably count on one hand the number of times a recipe has been included in our pages.

This July issue of MWP has a food focus-and still no recipes. Instead we share stories of women who care about food. "Women! We need to retake control of the food system ... Let's turn our passion for good eating into a place on which to take a stand," wrote CSA farmer Nett Hart.

Read the MWP exclusive online story about a gathering of women farmers, grassroots organizers and political activists, policy analysts and governmental leaders, authors and academics at Cultivate 2012. Their goal: advancing women's leadership in healthy food systems and the sustainable agriculture movement.

We get close to a "recipe" story when Jan Lillemo shares her memories about her mother's addiction to collecting recipes from Joyce Lamont in another web exclusive story. Lillemo's mother wrote down this foodie's recipes every day as she listened to her WCCO radio program. Gwen Schock Cowherd also wrote about her passion: Reading cookbooks. Kathy's dad was right. While we don't publish recipes, we don't discount their power of relationship. Norma fondly remembers her older neighbor every time she makes "Eleanor Sanfords' Cutting Sugar Cookies" and Olive Mullen when she makes her former employer's fabulous shortbread cookies. The latest addition to her cookie repertoire is macaroon chocolate chip cookies from the ARC cookbook, baking up sweet memories of times spent at this Minnesota retreat center.

In this issue you'll read about women and the importance of food in our lives-a bi-vocational farmer-
minister, women who run CSAs and food co-ops, Women Who Really Cook, changing the public conversation about obesity and fat shaming, and an organization that funds community art with a FEAST. Food is not just about great taste, it's about nourishment, connection and calls to action.
