Through 9/14, Minnesota Nice in Duluth

Prøve Gallery in Duluth is featuring the “Minnesota Nice” exhibition by Carla Hamilton. Using film, photography, and collage, the show seeks to raise awareness of social discrepancies — that while being individuals from different backgrounds and heritages, our journeys are more alike than unalike. It creates an uncomfortable safe space for dialogue, growth, and community building. Where: 21 N. Lake Ave., Duluth. Details: provegallery.com

Through 9/21, Genome in Rochester

Art and science merge in “Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code,” using media interactives, 3D models, custom animations, and videos of real-life stories related to give attendees a new way to look at themselves as individuals, as members of a family, and as part of the diversity of life on Earth. It includes the installation by Shah Noor Shafqat, “Intimate Gravity,” that incorporates abstract paintings with paintings of her baby in utero and explores the range of emotions a mother feels knowing she will most likely pass on a genetic condition to her child. Scheduled conversations, book club discussions, and free family days are part of the program.

Where: Rochester Arts Center, 40 Civic Center Drive SE. When: Tues. to Sat. 10am-5pm, with extended Wed. hours to 9pm. Admission: $5 adult. Details: 507-282-8629, rochesterartscenter.org

Through 9/23, Roadside Attractions

“Roadside Attractions” is the exhibition featuring St. Paul artist Patty Voje, a transplant city dweller yearning for the open spaces and nostalgic moments of a childhood spent on a farm. She drives through the countryside applying large brushes of paint to canvas. In capturing the humor on a cow’s face, she also hopes to spark conversation about the ethical treatment of farm animals and plant-based diets.

Where: Atrium Gallery, Bloomington Center for the Arts, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. When: Mon. to Fri. 8am to 10pm, Sat. 9am to 5pm, Sun. 1pm to 10pm. Details: artistrymn.org
